More winter
I don’t know about you all, but I am glad this little bugger is foreseeing more winter for us. I am a Phoenix native. I grew up in Florida on the Redneck Riviera. I have only experienced two real winters in my entire life. My first winter was the blizzard of 94 in Philadelphia, PA. It started the night I was driving to my first permanent duty station in the U.S. Navy to serve aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. I walked to the ship in my dress blues with snow halfway up my shin. Just a few days prior to this, I slipped on ice and bit through my bottom lip and cracked a tooth.
I hate winter.
I really, really, really hate winter.
So why do I want more? Because I live in Phoenix. Because it has been mid-70s for the past month in the day and only mid-40s at night. This is nice, I know. And in all actuality, if it was like this all the time I wouldn’t complain. But I miss those few really good days of biting cold in the 30s at night and 50s during the day. It makes me ready for the summer—when nights are at a low in the 90s and it’s 110 or higher in the day. I need those few cold days to mentally prepare for the heat, and the inevitable day that my AC will go out and I’m sitting in front of a fan wearing a wet t-shirt to stay cool while I wait for the repairman and my family is having ice cream at the mall… smiling and laughing about me being miserable at home.
All that just to say a simple thank you to Punxsutawney Phil. You’re my favorite rodent.
The Hanukkah Dilemma
My garbage disposal/sink doesn’t handle potato peels all that well. Maybe this is something most latke aficionados have learned themselves, or from someone else. However, I rarely do the cooking and have never helped before this year with latke preparation, and I was not expecting this dilemma at all.
Fitness: Paaht II
It has been 2 months and 10 days since I started working on some new fitness goals. I’ve posted a screenshot here that you can checkout to see the progress I’ve made (the spreadsheet, not the cat). I have had 4 measurements since my baseline, and I’ve made steady progress and am now just starting to see results, and though they’re modest, I’m very happy with where they’re going. Before you click the image, I haven’t measured since October 17 because of my recent job change, but will be measured again this week. When I do, I’ll update this post. All disclaimers aside, here’s the progress I’ve made thus far: Read the rest of this entry
A new chapter. Well, a new job. But it has to do with chapters.
I’ve been slacking on the writing… normally I do something every two or three weeks, but I’ve let it go five weeks now I believe. Usually this means a blog is dying and dreams of being an aspiring popular blahgist are crushed by the reality that only the few readers you’ve gotten are going to keep looking at your Internet drivel and you’ve come to accept that you will never attain even Internet-mediocrity, but will reside with the other 4 billion people who blog about their irritable bowel syndrome and how they keep thinking they are being abducted by aliens. Fitness

Hear me now and believe me later.
My pursuit of fitness began about 2 years ago. My wife, who has always taken excellent care of herself, came down with cancer, and halfway through her eventually victorious battle I realized that if she can get it, then I’m definitely screwed if I don’t make some changes. Red Hot Chili Peppers live broadcast from Cologne, Germany
As soon as it was announced the Peppers would be broadcasting a live concert from Cologne, Germany to theaters around the world I checked to see if tickets were available in Phoenix. Knowing I live in the 5th largest city in the U.S., I had little doubt, just wondered about location. Fortunately, there was a theater just 10 minutes away where it would be playing.
